Pilates Powerhouse

01/09/2011

When Joseph Pilates created the exercises for Pilates he wanted the practitioners to concentrate on the stabilization of their core, what he also called the “Powerhouse”. The powerhouse is comprised of all the muscles in the body between the bottom of the rib cage and the upper pelvic bone. A strong powerhouse is the necessary foundation for any movement during Pilates.

In order to strengthen your powerhouse you must bring your navel back in to your spine, making sure that your breast bone and pelvic bone are both equally aligned, holding this position will activate the other muscles in your body including those in your back and thighs. It is also important that while you hold this position you continue to breathe through your chest. Keeping this alignment will add an extra intensity to your workout, not to mention that you will be doing in the exact way the creator intended.

Pilates is not only an exercise designed to strengthen the body, but also the mind. It is important that when you do Pilates to concentrate on your powerhouse as well as the rest of your body to reap the full benefits of the exercise. On the TRAINERmat Pilates edition there are 30 detailed illustrations to depict 10 different exercises. That means that you will have no difficulties understanding the movements and strengthening your powerhouse increasing stabilization.
